Lacoste is a French apparel company started in 1933 by René Lacoste. René Lacoste was a designer as well as a famous tennis player. He designed his own tennis shirt out of a light knitted fabric that in those days was unheard of. His friends nicknamed him ‘alligator’ and then changed it to ‘crocodile’. After a friend gave him a drawing of a crocodile, Lacoste embroidered it on his golf shirt. That crocodile is the Lacoste logo for Lacoste clothing today.

After he retired from tennis, René began designing the Lacoste polo shirts for tennis. The Lacoste polo shirt became very popular when it was sent to the United States to be sold. Very few knew that these Lacoste polos were once known as Lacoste alligator shirts.

Samsonite hold the license to produce Lacoste bags and leather products, Pentland Brands produces Lacoste footwear and Devanlay owns the exclusive worldwide license for the clothing line.
